What is Ikebana International?

Ikebana International (II) is a world-wide cultural organization dedicated to the promotion and appreciation of the Japanese art of flower arrangement founded by Ellen Gordon Allen in 1956. Her dream was to unite the people of the world through their mutual love of nature and enjoyment of Ikebana. II does not teach a specific type of Ikebana; rather, it is an interest group of individuals of many nationalities who enjoy Ikebana and other Japanese arts. Many have studied Ikebana; some have not.
There are many different schools of Ikebana: some stress classic styles; others focus on contemporary forms; and some blend the two. At II meetings, students and teachers share openly their schools' inspirations, styles, philosophy, history, and techniques. II was founded by and continues to be administered by volunteers in the more than 165 chapters from over 60 countries and areas worldwide. Our motto is "Friendship through Flowers".
